The cuckoos have now fallen silent since the adults have largely departed for Africa, leaving the young fledglings to be nourished by their host parents until their instincts prompt them to fly as well. Ground-nesting birds are beginning to vacate the heathlands as the fledglings start to become independent and the heather begins to bloom.
Water mint blooms vibrantly along damp ditches and brooks, attracting bees, butterflies, and hoverflies. Dragonflies, in their distinctive rattling flight, often patrol these streams and brooks. National Dragonfly Week runs from the 6th to the 13th July and the new forest serves as a sanctuary for all five heathland species: the golden-ringed, the black darter, the broad-bodied chaser, the emperor, and the keeled skimmer.
