During May the hedgerows are laden with blossom and the scent of nature, where birds flit in and out of the dense foliage to feed a brood of hungry chicks and pollinators make the hedgerows hum. Cuckoos are in full voice and trees are starting to grow verdant with unfurled leaves and flowers.

Woodland verges are peppered with wood anemones, bluebells, stitchwort, celandines and wood sorrel, where deeper into the ancient woodland garlic is flowering and cubs are coming above ground.

Tadpoles in the ponds are turning into adults as froglets start to leave the water for damp, sheltered ground, and a flash of blue may be spotted with a swift flight of a kingfisher along the river.

Dense heathlands protect ground nesting birds and shelter reptiles from the sun. Stonechats shout from the tops of the gorse and red kites and buzzards circle above.

Grasslands are playgrounds for newly born foals, and a place to spot deer bouncing away into the distance.

These are all things you can observe on this short, 3.5 mile circular walk from Setley Pond, and keep your eyes peeled, because while I was there I saw a white tailed eagle.

All this and a pub enroute, what not to like!
